NYCC 2019 | BOOM! Studios' Power Rangers Necessary Evil Panel!

The Power Rangers are at New York Comic Con 2019 (NYCC 2019) and during the BOOM! Studios' POWER RANGERS: NECESSARY EVIL NYCC panel in Room 1A24, we got some first looks at character and Zord designs as well as some information on what is to come. The Morphinominal Panelist included Ryan Parrott, Sina Grace, Daniele Di Nicuolo, Simone Di Meo, Dafna Pleban, Austin St. John, Karan Ashley, and Steve Cardenas and was moderated by Jim Viscardi.

The panel started off with some Necessary Evil discussion and reveals. Editor Dafna Pleban took a moment to thank the creative team and the creative team for making the event a success. We then got a closer look at some designs of the Omega Rangers! Daniele Di Nicuolo revealed that the Omega Rangers' designs are based on alchemical symbols.

Simone Di Meo then shared his design for the Solar Ranger. Di Meo said he wanted to create a suit that could be translated into many different types of media. He also shared that seeing Ellarien in the video game is very exciting!

The focus then went back to Necessary Evil when the original Red Mighty Morphin Power Ranger Austin St John was asked about what it’s like seeing Jason’s journey continue in comics and he replied by saying, “I love it - I’m so proud!”

Austin wasn't the only Power Ranger on hand, two of the Stone Canyon Trio Karan Ashley (Aisha) and Steve Cardenas (Rocky) were also there. The two talked about the daunting task of being the newcomers on the team, and how it’s reflected in the story.

With every new team of Power Rangers comes a new fleet of Zords and we got a first look at the Omega Rangers' Zords, designed by Di Nicuolo. The artist shared that the alchemical and alien influence played heavily in the design of these new Zords. Pleban added that as cool as the Zords look now, they look even better in action! The editor also gave a big shout-out to colorist Walter Baiamonte’s amazing work.

The events of SABAN’S GO GO POWER RANGERS fills in the year between Shattered Grid and what’s going on in MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS now, and it is highly recommended for readers to pick up both series to get the full story!

The panel then moved on to talk about the upcoming MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES event, and the audience was pretty excited! When planning this event, Editor Dafna Pleban’s first picks to work on the series were Ryan Parrott and Simone Di Meo. Both creators immediately, and eagerly agreed, and were excited to have Dan Mora return to Power Rangers to do the covers! “It’s an embarrassment of riches!” said Dafna. Which lead to them revealing a first look at Dan Mora's covers for issues #2 & #3!

Artist Simone Di Meo said he grew up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so putting his own spin on the designs for this series was very exciting. This is also the first time he’s drawn the Turtles! BOOM! kept saying they were going to give something away and did they ever, they gave everyone at the panel an exclusive variant cover for MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1 NEW YORK SLICE EDITION!

Before the panel came to an end Dafna Pleban was asked about exploring stories with other Power Ranger teams, and the editor only said that there might be something to look forward to in future graphic novels...
